Emergent Readers for Eager
Readers (February Unit)
by Marilyn Andersen
The Emergent Reader mini-books
were created for the reading enjoyment of children in kindergarten. Children
are eager to read, but there aren't many books available or affordable at
their level of reading. They will have success with these beginning readers.

All the Emergent Reader books are available
for immediate download in Adobe Acrobat Format. Once you have
downloaded the files, print a Master Copy on standard 8.5 X 11 inch
paper. The pages may then be copied front and back to 8.5 X 11
copy paper. To assemble, cut each page in half and staple on the left
hand edge. They will make a book 8.5 X 5.5 inches in size. You
can make a set for each student to assemble and color, or assemble them
yourself as a classroom set.
Emergent Readers use patterned language for
easy reading and introduce sight words.
Your students will enjoy reading the
Emergent Readers in small guided reading groups. They can also be placed in
book boxes for independent reading, or placed in the book bags for take home
reading with parents.
Additional Activities:
- Make two copies of the book text on
sentence strips for a pocket chart.
Children can match the text with the second copy.
- Use wikki-stix for finding targeted
letters or words.
- Use the pattern for interactive writing
and continue the story on chart paper.
- Enlarge the books to "Big
Book" size and use for shared reading.
